Cap cai

Hello everyone,

When my wife and I got married, I naturally took over the kitchen as she professed hating to cook, but since I am mostly cooking non-Indonesian food, she started, bit by bit to cook, so she could enjoy Indonesian recipes at home. This recipe was our tonight's meal.

Preparation: 10 mn Cooking: 20 mn Total time: 30 mn
Difficulty: Easy

Nice dish that will make you, and even your kids, enjoy vegetables.

Ingredients:

2 people
2 tomatoes
1 carrot
100 g cabbage
100 g white mushrooms
8 shrimps
100 g green beans
1 spring onion
1 clove garlic
1 onion (or 1/2 one if it is a big one)
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon tomato sauce
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 lemongrass (optional)
1 tablespoon chili paste
oil

Preparation:

  1. Dice the carrot, chop the cabbage the white mushrooms, the garlic clove, the onion, the spring onion and the tomatoes. Remove the shrimps shells.

  2. In a wok, brown the garlic with the onion and add the chili paste and the shrimps; keep frying for a couple of minutes.

  3. Add the vegetables, the lemongrass, the tomato sauce, the sesame oil and 1/2 liter of water.

  4. Boil for about 15 minutes (the sauce must thicken slightly, if not, cook longer).

  5. Add the salt and pepper to taste.

  6. Serve with rice.

I must admit I am not a big fan of vegetables in general... but even tho this meal uses a lot, I still enjoy it, even if my perfectionist of a wife tries to make it taste like the best cap cai we ever ate (it was in a lobster restaurant in lake toba, can't recall the name sadly). If one day she manages to do so, be sure that I am posting the recipe here, in the mean time you'll have to settle for this good recipe instead.

Enjoy!
